Effect of preoperative incentive spirometry patient education on patient outcomes in the knee and hip joint replacement population
J Perianesth Nurs. 2014 Feb;29(1):20-7140 patients scheduled for either total hip or total knee arthroplasty were recruited and randomized in this study. Participants were allocated to either receive or not receive preoperative incentive spirometry education (POISE) intervention. The purpose was to determine the effect of POISE intervention on time to return to baseline incentive spirometry volume postoperatively, as well as pain, and the incidences of pulmonary and non-pulmonary postoperative complications until discharge. Overall, no significant differences between groups were noted.
