Seventy patients undergoing TKA were randomized to motivational interviewing (MI) plus usual care (n=35) or usual care alone (n=35). The primary outcome was change in functional status (Functional Assessment Form, FAF) and SF-36 quality of life from pre- to post-intervention. Secondary reporting included adjusted mean differences and effect sizes, with ANCOVA used to control baseline imbalances. Assessments were conducted at baseline and after completion of eight ~60-minute MI sessions spaced at 15-day intervals. Overall, the results of the study revealed larger gains with MI: FAF increased from 70.37 to 86.89 and SF-36 from 51.14 to 85.77, versus smaller improvements in controls. These findings suggest MI meaningfully augments functional recovery and health-related quality of life after TKA.
